A simple Bajan fish pie recipe that’s quick and easy to prepare. Learn to prepare it right and you’ll have friends and family coming back for more.

A Bajan fish pie is similar to macaroni pie but with codfish and a few other items added to the ingredients.

Also called fishermans pie by many in Barbados, it’s fish pie with a crust that makes everyone coming back for more.

Recipe

1 stick or 227g butter
2 medium onion minced
3 cloves garlic – minced
1 large sweet pepper finely chopped
1 tsp. Salt
2 limes
4lb. Salted codfish salt boil out
5 lbs. sweet potatoes – do not peel
Seasoned Salt to taste
2 cups milk
3 tbsp. breadcrumbs
2 tbsp old fashion Bajan pepper sauce
2 cups cheddar cheese grated

Method

Rub the juice from 2 limes on the codfish.

Set aside for 15 minutes.

Rinse and boil the salt fish 3 times for 5 minutes then drain and cool under running water.

Flake fish discarding bones and skin.

In a frying pan saute onions, sweet pepper, and garlic in 2 tbsp.

Butter for 3 minutes then add the salt fish.

Add seasoned salt and Old Fashion Bajan pepper sauce.

Cook for 10 minutes.

Stir frequently to avoid burning.

Boil the sweet potatoes in salted water until tender then drain and cool.

Peel and mash potatoes with milk and remaining butter. Season to taste.

Pour mash potato, dot with butter and sprinkle over breadcrumbs, cheese and bake in a 350-degree oven for 30 minutes or until the top is brown.
